How did Tea Hačić-Vlahović come about?
My mom wanted to keep her last name, so I took both!
Do you think of yourself as a journalist, a critic of society, or an artist?
My writing and videos are critical of society but I’d say I’m an artist. I’m surely not a journalist because I try to turn every interview and assignment into a piece about myself or whatever I’m interested in. I have my own agendas and don’t like taking directions, which journalists must do. Writing was only something I started doing to make up for the fact that I didn’t have a good singing voice and therefore couldn’t be a pop star.
How did your current projects with Vice and Wired come about?
The editors of both magazines were reading my blogs and they personally asked me to write columns! Both actually approached me with this idea at parties so that should be a lesson to all students to go out as much as possible!
Regarding your views of feminism, could you elaborate on how it helped you bring your brand together?
I guess always having that as a theme helped unite my audience and give most of my writing a “point” but otherwise my brand is more focused on mixing extreme vanity with self-deprecating humor.
What are the rules of digitalism in a feminist perspective?
Don’t wait for boys to text you; do it first; and keep your face out of nudes.
In the days of digital-exclusivity, do you think the Internet exclude perspectives of individuality and sexuality?
I think the internet enhances our individuality and sexuality!
Do you think people are taking you seriously based on your cultural impact (somewhat using shock values in order to bring attention to the cause)?
Some people take me too seriously, others think I’m a joke and only the intellectually superior (and my mama) know it’s a mix of both ;)
How do you view women’s sexual liberation, in terms of America vs. Croatia?
Croatian women taught me to be slutty. They taught me not to shame girls for their behavior and to be as honest and outspoken as possible. In many ways, Croatian women are much more liberated than their American sisters. Croatian society may not be perfect but our women are fighting for themselves.
Do Italians do it better?
The girls are better at walking in heels and the boys are better at lying.
